What's In The Fridge? - Due To Incompetence (1993) Re-Issue

by Ian James Music

This is a reissue of the original second album from the band What's in the Fridge? Recorded and released in 1993 on limited edition cassettes, the album has sat dormant under a layer of dust since the band officially broke up in 1995.

What started as a three piece punk band suddenly morphed into four piece alternative/metal band, when guest guitarist Dean Pesaturo of Coexist joined the line up in 1992 for live performances and on this one album. The line up didn't bode well together, and the band returned to a three piece with Deans dismissal in early 1994.

The album captures the band in transition as a shift in writing was taking place, to allow Joe Riot to be more of a front man/ singer than having both duties of singing and playing especially live. The album which the band describes as "the most stressful to record" and " worst of the catalog" did not come together without issue. In fact inner turmoil among band members created a tension resulting in physical violence the morning of the recording, before the tape even began rolling. The drum and bass were captured live in the studio on day one, with Joe and Dean taking turns appearing in the studio separately to work on their respective parts until recording finished.

The band recorded more material as a three piece in 1994, as Joe returned to guitar and vocals, and as the lead songwriter again. As good as the songs are on Due to Incompetence, its the album title that is most fitting in describing the events that led to its recording and the time period the band was enduring.
